Madinan · 8 ayat · 100th in order of revelation
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
لَمۡ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأۡتِيَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ
The status quo of the deniers [of Allah’s power and authority] from among people of [earlier] scripture along with the mushriks was their [common] assertion that they would not break free of their kufr until genuine verification [of the divine truth] comes to them —
رَسُولٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ يَتۡلُواْ صُحُفٗا مُّطَهَّرَةٗ
[That verification being] a messenger from Allah who would correlate [for them] unflawed divine scripts,
فِيهَا كُتُبٞ قَيِّمَةٞ
Wherein there are valuable volumes.
وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ
But those who had received earlier [divine] scriptures only became disunited after [that] genuine verification [a messenger] came to them.
وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ
In any event, they were only instructed to conform to Allah — sincerely discharging their dīn obligations to Him — independent [of temporal powers and authorities], and to socialize the ṣalāh and systemize the zakāh: for that is the dīn of worth and quality.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ شَرُّ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ
Definitely, those who deny [Allah’s power and authority] from among people of scripture and the mushriks are in the fire of Hell, therein to stay for eternity: they are the worst of all who were born innocent.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ
[Likewise], definitely, those who commit themselves faithfully [to Allah’s power and authority] and do what is right [and conscionable] — it is they, they who are the best of all who were born innocent.
جَزَآؤُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتُ عَدۡنٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدٗاۖ رَّضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُۥ
Theirs shall be a reward [prepared for them] by their Sustainer: a residential paradise [of blissful gardens] with rivers flowing underneath, wherein they will live for eternity. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah: all of that is for he who is in awe of Allah!
