87al-A‘lāThe Above-Allسُورَةُ الأعلى

Extol the name of your Sustainer who is Above-All,

Who created and brought [everything] into [proportionate] order,

And Who assessed [and evaluated], then He oriented [and guided],

And Who sprouted pasturage [and forage],

And thereupon turned it all into dark and dismal residuum [and debris]!

We shall brief you [incrementally], and you will not forget [Our briefings],

Except what Allah may determine [for you to forget] — for, in fact, He [and only He] knows the overt and that which is concealed:

And We shall allay your [distress and escort you to] composure [in fulfillment of your responsibilities].

Raise the [public] stream of consciousness, whether this stream of consciousness is of any value [to them or not]:

Conscientious of it is he who stands in awe [of Allah],

And desisting from it is he who is miserable [and sorrowful] —

He who will be seared in the grand fire,

Whereupon he will neither die therein nor remain alive.

Successful is he who elevates himself by purifying it [the stream of consciousness],

And is conscious of his Sustainer’s name and thus communicates [with and implores] Him.

But, even so, you [the addressees] prefer worldly life,

Although the final life is better and more enduring.

Indeed, this is [to be found] in earlier [divine] scripts —

The [divine] scripts of Ibrāhīm and Mūsā.
